TIRANA, Aug 31 – Ilir Meta’s decision for SMI to enter a coalition with the ruling DP of Sali Berisha has caused a division among party members.
Senior SMI members Pellumb Xhufi, Fatos Klosi, Sabit Brokaj, Ndre Legisi and Mustafa Muci told journalists that deal was self-destructive for the party.
“The votes given to the leftists cannot be a vote in support of Berisha’s government. We do not want to command respect to anyone, but we cannot accept any talks with the DP,” Xhufi said.
They criticized the party leader (Meta) they had campaigned on taking Democratic Party’s Prime Minister Sali Berisha out of power and not become his supportive and guaranteeing tool to stay in power.
The SMI won four seats in the June 28 parliamentary election that will join the other 70 of the Democrats to calmly create the new cabinet.
