The Ideal World of Dictatorship?
The exhibition featuring power structures and daily life in the former East Germany will be open until October 28
TIRANA, Oct. 18 – “The Ideal World of Dictatorship” exhibition, inaugurated on October 18 at the premises of the German embassy in Tirana, is featuring photographs by Germany’s Harald Schmitt, who worked for 6 years in the former East Germany as photo journalist. With passion, love to detail and empathy for the people, Schmitt has documented the daily reality of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) citizens. Historian Stefan Wolle wrote the poster texts.
The exhibition featuring power structures and daily life in the former East Germany will be open until October 28.
The exhibition explains what East Germany was like until 1989 when thousands of people took to the streets protesting against the communist regime and the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED), which led to the collapse of the Berlin Wall later in November 1989 and Germany’s reunification in October 1990.
This year’s German October celebrations, which correspond to the 20th anniversary of Germany’s reunification and communism collapse in Albania, will be marked with a wide-ranging programme of events until November 26.
October 22 and 23 will bring an international conference called “20 years after, reflections on democracy and governance in Albania.” The conference, organized by the Albanian Institute for International Studies (AIIS), the Albanian Media Institute, the Graz University and the Friedrich Ebert foundation, will bring together Albanian and international experts discussing Albania’s progress during the past two decades and challenges ahead.
