TIRANA, Oct. 27 – The opposition Socialist Party leader Edi Rama said that the political grouping was also preparing a request for a vote of non-confidence for the government to be made at the parliament.
That is the last significant step pronounced from the opposition that is for more than 16 months complaining and protesting against alleged vote count manipulation last year.
Speaking at a talk show to a private television channel, News24, the opposition leader said that though that step was not an issue of the day that was to be considered in the near future
That is not an easy step because when presenting the request for a vote of non-confidence the opposition should also present the name of the new prime minister who could be able to create a cabinet.
On Wednesday Rama repeated the threat of the new protests and also that the government should leave.
This government should leave and Albania freely live with a new government. We shall start protest against the government,” said Rama after a meeting of the party’s leadership.
At the moment the opposition does not enjoy the majority of the votes in the 140-seat parliament.
They have only 65 though there could be some separate lawmakers from the governing majority of the Democratic Party alliance who could change their place where their vote is cast.
Center-right governing Democrats and their allies with 70 seats have been joined by the leftist Socialist Movement for Integration of Ilir Meta with four votes.
The Socialists want a partial recount of the vote, something that is turned down by the Democrats as breaking the laws.
The opposition has used all democratic tools like boycotting the parliament, street protests, hunger strike and also the boycott of any voting at the parliament.
Despite international pressure and mediation both sides have not managed to really sit down and resolve the political deadlock which could also have its negative impact on the country’s application for the candidate status at the European Union.
