TIRANA, May 7 – The Interior Ministry says it is still working to clean the voters’ lists from double-listed names.
Deputy Interior Minister Ferdinand Poni said they would try to complete the process in time for the June 23 polls, sparking concern among some as to why it hasn’t been completed already.
Poni said they have worked hard with the double-listed names and the names of the persons above 100-years-old, most of whom have passed away.
He also said they are still working to clarify the cases of some 17 voting stations, located mainly in the prisons and having less than 1,000 voters in their lists.
Officially there are 3,271,956 voters in Albania. Poni said that about 14,000 of them are not found in the lists made public so far. He added that in May there were only 1,454 double-listed names found and added it won’t affect the elections.
But the voters’ lists remain a weak point and one which the authorities have always discussed ahead of the polls.
