TIRANA, Feb. 24 – Albania targets transforming its ailing economy in the next seven years from domestic consumption focused production to export-oriented production of high value added products easily accessible to regional and global markets, says government in its 2014-2020 draft strategy on business and investments.
Introducing the strategy, Economy Minister Arben Ahmetaj said the mission of this strategy is making Albania more competitive. “By 2020 Albania targets becoming a country which develops and improves the business climate, through an open and competitive market, a dynamic industry and competitive exports. With its measures and activities, this strategy will contribute to making Albania an attractive destination for foreign investments,” said Gjiknuri.
The strategy targets that by 2020, the number of active enterprises will increase by 10.6 percent, the number of employees will rise by 34 percent, exports will grow by 68 percent while foreign direct investment will increase by 46 percent.
The strategy is in compliance with the SEE 2020 strategy promoting competitiveness and investments.
“Guaranteeing sustainable growth requires the identification of new sources that feed economic growth and alternatives to some of the current growth resources which in the short and mid run are expected to contribute more than now,” said Gjiknuri.
In its 2013-2017 programme, the Socialist Party-led government recognizes the limitations of the development model based on a remittances-fuelled construction boom and raw material exports, and aims to shift the focus to new sources of growth by identifying manufacturing, energy, tourism and agribusiness as priority areas. The programme also pledges fiscal discipline and the payment of accumulated public arrears.
