TIRANA, Feb 23 – Kosova formally asked neighboring Albania to jointly create a working group to discuss increasing the capacity of the Shengjin port so that it could use it to exchange with the world.
This was made known during the visit of various Kosovar ministers in Tirana.
Kosovo’s Prime Minister Hashim Thaçi said that he has asked his Albanian counterpart Sali Berisha to bring the agreement that would allow Kosovo use the northern Albanian port of Shëngjin to life.
“I am in very close contact with Prime Minister Berisha and as far as the agreement for the port of Shengjin is concerned, I want to believe that we will very soon sign an agreement between the Government of Albania and the Government of Kosova,” Thaçi said at a cabinet meeting.
“Access to Kosova through this port will have benefits for Kosova, the Albanian state and the entire region. We consider that the rapid formalization of this agreement would be an extraordinary contribution to the realization of our development goals,” Thaçi said.
Albania is also building a highway that will link Shëngjin with the town of Gjakova, Kosovo which is roughly 100 kilometers from the sea.
