TIRANA, Sept. 3 – Authorities have confiscated about 26,000 square meters of land and several buildings in Durres County based on the country’s anti-mafia legislation, the General Prosecutor’s Office said this week.

The plots were the property of Dashamir Gjoka of Shijak, a man accused of having bought the land through money laundering the receipts of crime, authorities said.

The decision was taken following cooperation with Italian authorities, proving that Gjoka was sentenced in 2007 for running a prostitution ring in Italy.

Earlier this year, Albania strengthened its laws to make it easier for authorities to confiscate property belonging to people convicted anywhere of charges related to organized crime.
