TIRANA, Nov. 23 – Albania climbed 13 steps to rank 70th among 140 countries in the 2015 Global Gender Gap report published by the World Economic Forum on improved economic, educational and political indicators. The result marks Albania’s best ranking since the inaugural 2006 edition when Albania ranked 61st out of 115 countries.

Only neighboring Macedonia ranked slightly better at 69th among regional EU aspirants in this year’s report.

“Albania has improved its overall ranking by 13 positions since 2014. However, it is also the country from the region that has progressed the least over the past 10 years on the educational attainment and health and survival subindexes,” said the report.

Albania’s best position in this year’s report was in the political empowerment indicator due to a higher number of women in parliament and in ministerial positions.

Economic participation and opportunity ranks Albania 69th on huge differences in estimated earned income between women and men but no gap in wage equality for similar work.

Albania ranked 98th in educational attainment with poor progress in women’s enrolment in primary and secondary education. Within this indicator, enrolment in tertiary education ranks Albania first among the surveyed countries with a female-to-male ratio of 1.3.

Health and survival ranks Albania among the bottom countries at 142nd due to males dominating the sex ratio at birth, apparently because of selective abortions.

With a decade of data, this edition of the Global Gender Gap Report shows that while the world has made progress overall, stubborn inequalities remain.

The Global Gender Gap Index 2015 ranks 145 economies according to how well they are leveraging their female talent pool, based on economic, educational, health-based and political indicators.
