TIRANA, March 1 – Thanks to its wholly hydro-dependent domestic electricity production and huge oil production, Albania has made it to the top 20 performers globally on its ability to deliver secure, affordable and sustainable energy.
The latest Global Energy Architecture Performance Index Report 2016 published by the World Economic Forum ranked Albania 17th among 126 countries globally as the best South East Europe country, sandwiched between the U.K. and Croatia.
On a 0 to 1 scale, Albania scored an average of 0.71 on economic growth and development, environment sustainability and energy access and security measuring the extent to which energy architecture supports growth, minimizes negative environment externalities and access to all part of the population.
Compared to 2009, Albania climbed 17 places in the index.
“High-performing countries are not confined to a single region. The EAPI points to the strengths of countries beyond the usual suspects. For example, Albania (17th) and Paraguay (21st) boasted fully decarbonized electricity generation (0 grams of carbon dioxide per kilowatt-hour), which is reflected in above-average environmental sustainability scores,” says the report.
Albania’s secures 100 percent of its domestically produced electricity from hydro power plants.
