TIRANA, Aug. 13 – Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” will be staged this weekend in a very special venue at the ancient Roman amphitheatre in Durres, the country’s second largest city which is already in its peak tourist season.

Staged as part of a request made to Prime Minister Edi Rama in the “My 2015 dream” by a theatre-goer from Durres, Shakespeare’s famous comedy will feature actors of the “Aleksander Moisiu” theatre under the direction of Driada Dervishi.

The comedy will be performed in an open-air stage at the Durres amphitheatre on Sunday, August 16 at 20:30.

Albanian culture officials have been lobbying to secure funds that would revitalize the Roman amphitheatre of Durres, the biggest in the Balkans, turning it into a site where different cultural events could be attended by up to 1,500 people.

Back in 2013, Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” made its comeback at the National Theatre in Tirana directed by American John Blondell.

“A Midsummer Night’s Dream” deals with the universal theme of love and its complications: lust, disappointment, confusion, and marriage. The plot focuses on three parallel stories: the trials and experiences of two sets of lovers camping in a magical forest, the world of the Fairy King and Queen and their elves, and a group of rough craftsmen attempting to stage a production of “Pyramus and Thisby” for the wedding of the Duke of Athens.
