POLICAN, May 5 – The defense ministry’s specialized plant in Polican continues to dismantle shells that are not used by the army any more.
The country has more than 90,000 tons of excess ammunition which it needs to get rid of as a condition along its reforms in the military.
A month ago Albania became a NATO member.
The Polican plant is disposing of some 858 tons of 82-milimeter shells deposited there last year. More are to come this year.
The plant has all the required technical standards for some 130 employees.
The Polican plant is the main place of disposing the excess ammunition following last year’s blast in Gerdec where a private company was disposing shells. The blast killed 26 people and injured more than 300, including destruction or damage of thousands of houses and businesses in the area.
The plant was renovated with some $400,000 given from the US Department of State and started working in full capacity this week.
