TIRANA, Feb. 23 – The Albanian government has announced it will donate an embassy building to the world’s newest state, Kosova. Also, Prime Minister Sali Berisha said during a cabinet meeting that each minister had to prepare plans to improve relations with Kosova.
“All the ministries should review the legal framework for cooperation with Kosovo and push ahead with all the necessary agreements for increased ties between our two independent states,” said Berisha. Tirana formally recognized Kosova as an independent state a day after its proclamation February 17. “The Albanian government considers the creation of the state of Kosovo a historic event, which sanctions the right of Kosovo’s citizens to self-determination and which makes the Balkans more free and more just than they have ever been for centuries,” Berisha said.
A problem reported by local media is that the new Kosova embassy in Tirana may well be the building currently used by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe which is located between the Serbian and Russian embassies in downtown Tirana.
That, if proved true, may be considered a provocation and worsen Tirana’s relations with Belgrade and Moscow.
