Albania presents Berat and Gjirokastra at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris

UNESCO organized from February 16 to 18 the first thematic expert consultation meeting on sustainable management of the World heritage properties of religious interest in South- Eastern and Mediterranean Europe, which was held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France.
“The World Heritage Committee at its 35th session (UNESCO, 2011) requested the World Heritage Centre, in collaboration with the Advisory Bodies, to elaborate a thematic paper proposing to States Parties general guidance regarding the management of their cultural and natural heritage of religious interest,” according to UNESCO official website.  
 
With the main objective of discussing draft recommendations aimed at developing the general guidance, this was the first launched expert meeting that will be followed by a cycle of Regional Thematic Consultations towards the elaboration of sustainable management of the World heritage properties of religious interest in South- Eastern and Mediterranean Europe.
 
At the meeting the Albanian Institute of Cultural Monuments presented the topic entitled :  “Cultural Heritage with religious values in Historic Centers of Berat and Gjirokastra- World Heritage”
 
According to the Albanian Ministry of Culture, at the meeting the director of the Albanian Institute of Cultural Monuments, Arta Dollani presented the following:
A description of Historic Centers of Berat and Gjirokastra and their unique and  universal value for which they were declared  World Heritage.
A description of the religious monuments located in those  Historic Centers.
A presentation of religious spiritual values ”‹”‹associated with those historic centers and the local community life. Religious tolerance as a value of  Albanians, and the continuity of religious spiritual values ”‹”‹in these monuments over the centuries.
 
During her speech, Dollani also presented the legal and institutional framework, the challenges faced in this process, and how the Albanian Institute of Cultural Monuments and the Ministry of Culture are working on creating a  catalog of material values as well as identifying the spiritual values ”‹”‹associated with them.
