Albania ranks 85th in human development index

TIRANA, Dec. 16 – Albania ranked 85th out of 188 countries in the 2015 Human Development report examining the intrinsic relationship between work and human development, lagging behind most of its regional peers, according to a report by the United Nations Development Programme.

The human development index (HDI) is a summary measure for assessing long-term progress in three basic dimensions of human development including a long and healthy life, access to knowledge and a decent standard of living.

Albania’s HDI value for 2014 was at 0.733 which put the country in the high human development category, positioning it at 85 out of 188 countries. Between 1980 and 2014, Albania’s HDI value increased from 0.625 to 0.733, an increase of 17.2 percent or an average annual increase of about 0.47 percent. The rank is shared with Armenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Albania’s 2014 HDI of 0.733 was below the average of 0.744 for countries in the high human development group and below the average of 0.748 for countries in Europe and Central Asia.
