TIRANA, Feb. 12 – Prime Minister Sali Berisha said in a meeting with officials from the Kosovar town of Gjakova that ethnic Albanians in Kosova should be happy about the upcoming independence but also warned they should restrain themselves from any act that could damage their reputation in the eyes of the international community.
“All Kosovars should be high up in their legal and restrained joy because the eyes of the world opinion are focused on this victory,” said Berisha.
The Albanian premier advised his ethnic brethren that declaring independence should be treated carefully “as an obligation for the century-old sacrifice of the Kosovar people.”
Berisha said that with a new and independent Kosova there will be new room for spiritual and other types of collaboration with Albania. He mentioned new joint programs in culture, education, health, economy, infrastructure, business and trade.
Berisha assured the Kosovar officials that the Albanian government would give Kosova all the necessary support for strengthening their democratic state.
Tirana will continue investing in the infrastructure which links and enlarges the physical links with Kosova. Albania is building a highway linking the port of Durres with Morini to the Kosovar border. The premier said another, better road would link northern Shkodra city with Fierza to make the Gjakova commute easier.
