TIRANA, March 13 – Corruption remains a main obstacle to the country’s progress toward the European Union and its democratic progress. And immunity of the top officials, lawmakers, judges and prosecutors seems to be a main obstacle in the fight against it.
That has been a main topic of discussion among the country’s politicians in the last week and also a repeated call from the international representatives present in the country.
Prime Minister Sali Berisha mentioned again when talking to his lawmakers that they are ready to lift the immunity at the parliament if the opposition agrees to it.
The main opposition Socialist party’s leader Edi Rama also said that fighting corruption is closely linked with lifting the immunity of top officials.
These are words, but in practice they have done nothing.
