TIRANA, March 18 – Albanian chef Fundim Gjepali has been announced the winner of the Grand Prix of the International Mediterranean Cuisine in Gragnano, Naples, known as the capital of quality pasta.
Gjepali, who works as a chef in a famous restaurant in Rome, was awarded the first prize on March 15 for his special dish of hazelnut lamb.
“The dish I participated with in the competition is not a pure Albanian recipe, but its ingredients are all part of the Albanian cuisine. I am happy I was awarded the first prize as a representative of Albania. I feel happy I am giving my contribution in improving Albania’s reputation,” said Gjipali.
Twelve chefs from all over the world took part in the competition.
Born in the town of Shijak, central Albania, Gjepali, 31, was introduced to the world of food at a young age which inspired him to process raw materials with his own hands. Experiences in restaurants in Spain and France and since 1999 in Italy confirmed his culinary vocation.
Since 2008, he has been working as executive chef Antico Arco, one of Rome’s most famous restaurants.
“Natural talent, open-mindedness, accumulated technical expertise and a great respect for the very best of ingredients allow this young chef to work with his keen, nine-strong team to create an excellent all-round dining experience,” the restaurant says.
