TIRANA, July 16 – Albanian Defense Minister, Fatmir Mediu, visited Turkey last week to transfer the Secretariat of the Southeastern European Defense Ministerial to Macedonia.

The organization known as SEDM began in 1996 as a regional initiative to serve as a bridge to European-Atlantic institutions, particularly NATO.

The ceremony was held in Istanbul.

During his meeting with Turkish defense minister Vecdi Gonul Moisiu, Mediu received a reconfirmation of Turkey’s support for Albanian NATO membership efforts, probably to be acted upon in the next summit in Bucharest next spring.

Turkey is also a major supporter of Albania’s modernization of its army.
