Albanian Internal Audit Finds Financial Abuses

TIRANA, March 8- A report of Albania’s Internal Audit Directorate revealed that Albanian public bodies were guilty of financial irregularities totaling 7.3 billion leks ($76.4 million/58.1 million euro) last year, compared to 5.1 billion leks of irregularities in 2005. As a result disciplinary penalties, including fines and dismissals, were imposed on 754 civil servants.
The internal audit officers completed 183 check-ups of public sector bodies and 151 revealed irregularities. Most of the financial abuses, estimated at 4.9 billion leks, were uncovered in tax administrations. Irregularities with state money in customs offices came next, totaling 884.2 million leks.
