TIRANA, May 26 – An Albanian-Italian joint venture has been awarded a 30-year concession to build and operate a landfill just outside Durres, the country’s second biggest city.

In an announcement published in its latest bulletin, the Public Procurement Agency says a joint venture formed by Italy’s “Kinexia” and Albania’s “Albanian Landfill Energy” has been announced the winner of a tender held last November after a successful bid of 2.86 billion lek (Euro 20 million) of scheduled investments.

The environment and transport ministries say they have invited the joint venture to start negotiating the contract which must be completed in 30 days.

The construction of the landfill would give a solution to pollution in the coastal city of Durres, the biggest tourist destination in Albania, where waste dumping and burning are frequent in the outskirts.

The landfill is scheduled to be built in Manza, some 20 km outside Durres, serving the new bigger municipalities of Durres and Shijak under the territorial and administrative reform. The municipalities are expected to pay around €25 for every tonne of waste deposited in the landfill.
