TIRANA, May 9 – Albania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said one of its senior diplomats had been arrested in Turkey on drug trafficking charges.
A statement issued last week said Agim Haxhiu, second secretary at the Albanian Embassy in Skopje, Macedonia, was arrested May 2nd in western Turkey after his car was searched by police. He is being held in a prison near Istanbul.
Haxhiu was caught with 65 kilograms of heroin. He was immediately stripped of his immunity and will face prosecution in Turkey.
Albania is a transit point for drug trafficking in Southeast Europe.
The incident also served as another electoral tool for the opposition Socialists who reminded the electorate that this was the second employee of the Albanian Embassies to be caught in drug trafficking, following by a driver in Rome, Italy.
“Within a period of 6 months the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is involved in the circulation of drug trafficking with a value of 1 million Euros,” said the Socialist Party.
Socialist parliamentary group deputy head Erion Bra襠denounced that scandal next to the Ministry of Foreign Affair’s building.
