Army personnel trying to smuggle ammunition

TIRANA, March 20 – Police said Tuesday they had arrested four military personnel found with a considerable amount of ammunition which were considered to be trafficked illegally in any neighboring country. One army officer, two drivers and a depot manager working at an army unit in Peze Helmes, Tirana and one in Berat were stopped Tuesday evening in Karbunare near Lushnje. Police found under the stones which the Mercedes army truck was allegedly transporting 54,000 pistol rounds of ammunition and 3,000 Kalashnikov rounds. Police said they had also questioned two other persons. An investigation has started to define the target country or destination and the alleged network that operated the illegal traffic. Police said more arrest could be done in the future.
In another operation named Mini Blow police arrested Ardit Mana, 27, for trying to smuggle into Montenegro six pistols and rounds of ammunition.
Albania has been told that it needs to curb human, drug and weapon trafficking if it wants to join the European Union and the NATO.
