TIRANA, July 11 – The Association of Urban Transport in Tirana is demanding an increase in bus fare prices or excise-free oil in order to continue offering the service. The Association demands that the bus fares increase to Lek 50, up from 30 lek currently which is 66 percent more. The Association cites increased costs from the purchase of new buses and rising oil prices. The Association proposes excise free fuel as an alternative not to raise fare prices. Currently, the excise on fuel stands at 37 lek/litre.
A decision by the municipal council and later government is needed for urban transport prices to increase.
Opposition Socialist Party representatives at the Tirana Municipal Council have described the increase as unaffordable for ordinary Tirana citizens.
