Berat, Jan. 25- The municipality of Berat is sponsoring, beginning today on the International Day of Remembrance of the Shoah (Holocaust), a scientific conference entitled, “Berat for Hebrews’ Salvation”. In attendance at the conference will be several prominent ambassadors in Albania including Amira Arnon, Ambassador of Israel, John L. Withers III, Ambassador of the USA, Manuel Montobio de Balanco, Ambasador of Spain, Saba D’Elia, Ambassador of Italy, and others. The participants addressing the conference are well-known members of the Albanian intelligentsia, especially in the field of historiography. Professors Pellumb Xhufi, Aleksander Meksi, Jorgo Bulo, Ferit Duka, Shaban Sinani, Naim Zoto, Muzafer Korkuti and Kostas Giakoumis are among the most prominent keynote speakers participating in the event. On this occasion, the municipality will award certificates of honor and recognition to the families that assisted, and in some cases saved, Jewish families during the war years.
Albania is one of the few European countries which massively opposed the final solution program and saved the lives of hundreds of Jews. For this reason, Albanian families are honored in the list of the Righteous Among the Nations.
