TIRANA, July 17 – Britain’s Ambassador to Tirana, Fraser Wilson, appealed on Tuesday for Albanian political parties to find a consensual president, in a first appeal from the international community during the current presidential election deadlock.

Unlike other times and issues in which the international community has not become involved, the ambassador’s remarks are meant as a clear sign that the presidential election is completely in the hands of the Albanian political parties.

The inability to elect a president is likely to bring on new parliamentary elections.

“We believe it would be good to find a consensus to elect the president and take reforms ahead,” said Wilson at a conference on Albania’s judiciary.

The international community has made it clear, however, that they would not welcome new elections in the country, which would be considered as a break in the country’s much-needed reforms as it moves towards NATO and EU membership.
