British minister strengthens police ties with Albania

TIRANA, Feb 17 – British State Minister of Police, Crime and Security, Vernon Coaker made a visit to Albania to meet with all top officials in the country involved in the sphere of law enforcement.
Coaker met with Interior Minister Bujar Nishani and also top policeman Ahmet Prenci.
Nishani told Coaker Albania’s achievements in the fight against organized crime, illegal trafficking and corruption, strengthening security in the country and continuing contribution to regional security and cooperation.
The minister said that Albanian law enforcement institutions had cracked down on about 300 organized crime groups and put to justice some 1,000 members of these groups in the last three years. He also said some 250 Albanians were extradited from other countries.
Nishani also told Coaker the results of the fight against illegal trafficking, integrated border management and the deepening of cross-border cooperation with neighboring countries.
He also mentioned the fact of initializing the issuing of the new identity cards and soon of the biometric passports for Albanian citizens.
“We are very focused on improving legislation, increasing professionalism of police structures and the training of police,” said Nishani.
Coaker said he was pleased with the Albanian achievements in the fight against criminal activities, and also for the cooperation between police structures with Britain.
“We encourage regional cooperation and appreciate the role and contribution of Albania in this direction,” he said.
Coaker also met with head of police, Ahmet Prenci to learn about ties between British and Albanian police forces.
Prenci also said that some four million Euros have been invested from the UK to the Albanian police.
Prenci also reminded Coaker that despite cooperation in some cases, British courts refuse to extradite Albanian alleged suspects, adding they were open for exchange of information on that issue.
Coaker assured Prenci he would do his utmost so that wanted Albanians were extradited to their home.
