TIRANA, Sept. 22 – Carmina Burana, originally a musical by Germany’s Carl Orff, will make its comeback at the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet to open the new season.
The ballet which made its premiere in last year’s German October events will be staged on Sept. 23 and 24 in a show featuring some of the best Albanian opera singers and ballet dancers.
Opera House director Zana à‡ela says the show has been refreshed with new elements brought by Italian conductor Alessandro Cadario who will be conducting his first Carmina Burana as a ballet.
“The central topic of my choreography is the human beings’ stance towards the laws of nature. Those challenging their harmony are destined to fail,” says Hungarian choreographer Youri Vamos.
Fifty years after its construction under Albania’s communist regime, the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet, Albania’s solo performing arts institution of its kind, is set to be renovated under a €8.6 million government funded project.
The 30-month reconstruction is scheduled to start in January 2017 and finish by June 2019 in a project that will make a thorough renovation that involves architecture, stage design, acoustic and air-conditioning systems.
While the National Theater will be under reconstruction, its artists will be performing in other stages in Tirana and outside the capital.
