TIRANA, June 28 – Preliminary exit polls showed Prime Minister Sali Berisha’s Democratic Party had won.
That had immediate reactions from his supporters, filling the streets in the capital Tirana and other cities.
Driving around with party flags flying and with fingers in the “V for Victory” sign, one also saw a blocked Skanderbeg Square.
Hundreds of Berisha supporters took to the streets in Albanian cities waving party banners and honking horns to celebrate the unofficial results, and fireworks lit the sky in Tirana, the country’s capital.
Rama disputed the polls and urged voters to wait for official results and not to be influenced by the celebrations.
“The process is ongoing,” Rama said. The opposition on its side, likely feeling humiliated at the moment, tried to remain calm.
But unlike other times Albanians were probably surprised by Berisha and Rama, both coming out in news conferences appealing to their supporters to keep calm and wait for official results.
That was the news that night. Both leaders also said they would accept any result of the elections.
Berisha went further saying he would call Rama if the latter won. But that was likely a sign of victory on his part based on the exit polls.
