TIRANA, Oct. 27 – Albania’s Prosecutor General Adriatik Llalla said this week there are many cases the drug traffickers are assisted by individuals who have a duty to fight them.

“Italian anti-mafia investigations have recently provided data that Albanian criminal groups have trafficked to Italy tons of narcotic cannabis and in many cases this was done with the support of individuals who have the task of fighting this crime,” Llalla said at a conference in Tirana.

The comments came at the height of the debate over the prosecution of Saimir Tahiri, the former interior minister who faces charges of collusion with a cannabis trafficking criminal gang.

The Tahiri issue has brought not only strong political debates but also a clear divide between the ruling majority and the prosecution, which had requested and was denied authorization for Tahiri’s arrest.

Prime Minister Rama has not spared criticisms of the prosecutors of the case, saying there were politically-motivated.

Speaking to media, Llalla said that no one should or can interfere with the work of prosecutors assigned to the Tahiri case, and that included him.

Llalla made the comments at a conference Tuesday on the fight against drug trafficking organized by the French embassy.
