TIRANA, Sep. 24 – Christian Democratic Party lawmakers claimed Monday they had been the victims of electronic wiretaps and asked for the creation of a parliamentary investigative committee on the issue.
Pashko Ujka met Monday with President Bamir Topi and said after the meeting he received the president’s support to investigate the case.
The Christian Democrats will need one-fourth of the 140-seats to begin the investigation. They have been supported by some Democratic lawmakers on the issue.
The recent political crisis among the Christian Democrats, part of the governing coalition of Prime Minister Sali Berisha of the Democratic Party, started last week after the arrest of Deputy Transport Minister Nikolin Jaku who is accused of corruption and abuse of power.
Jaku is a member of the Christian Democrats.
At the same time, Christian Democrats proposed their former top leader, Zef Bushati, to replace Jaku in the post.
