TIRANA, Feb. 20 – An exhibition featuring the 20th anniversary of the collapse of the almost 50-year communist regime and the removal of communist symbols opened last week at the premises of the National Historic Museum in Tirana. The exhibition by Gani Xhengo brought back memories of the re-establishment of the multi-party system in December 1990 following student protests and the overthrow of the statue of Enver Hoxha, who ruled the country with an iron hand for 40 years, from the city center.
Some 100 photos were displayed in the exhibition called “A journey in Albania during the 90s through photos.”
Xhengo, a former photographer of the ATA state-run news agency, says he took more than 100 photos on 20 February 1991 when thousands of people gathered in the capital’s central square to topple the statue of the late dictator.
The exhibition featuring mostly black and white photos remained open until Feb.24.
