Cox East Texas, Oct. 23 – An American newspaper, the Daily Sentinel, reported that an East Texas congressman was trying to help prevent the deportation of a Lufkin, Texas restaurateur to his Albanian homeland.
U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Tyler) said he has approached Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice about the issue. Gohmert believes claims by the family of Rrustem Neza that the 32-year-old man will be killed if he is sent back to Albania, and that he will consider the U.S. government partially responsible for Neza’s death if that happens.
Neza and his brother, Xhemal Neza of Nacogdoches, own a handful of East Texas eateries, including the Joe’s Italian Grill restaurants in Lufkin and Nacogdoches.
Rrustem Neza has several family members who have been granted asylum, but he, his wife Nurie and their 10-year-old son all face deportation.
The family contends that because Rrustem Neza publicly identified the men accused of assassinating a Democratic leader back in his homeland, he could be killed upon returning to Albania.
No deportation date has been set as far as the congressman’s office knows.
