Czech Republic helps environment protection

TIRANA, April 1 – The Czech Republic Opening ceremony launched a new project in the environment sector in the Kucova region worth around 1 million Euro in terms of the Development Assistance.
The name of the project is “Implementation of New Environmental Technology for Oil Industry, Ku谶a Region” and it will be implemented in 2009 – 2012. The funds are provided by the Czech Government in terms of the Development Assistance of the Czech Republic to the Republic of Albania.
Oil fields in Albania present a serious threat for local habitants and also for the environment. The project will make comprehensive remediation and minimization of elimination of discharged wasted. In the Kucova region, there are massive contaminations by petroleum substances. The contamination in the area is a result of crude oil reprocessing.
The main goal of the project is the minimization of environmental risks in the former refinery of Kucova and its vicinity. Implementation of the project will be divided in three phases. The first one will be detailed mapping and site screening, inventory of previous damage, elaboration of risk assessment, and detailed documentation of selected riskiest areas. The second phase will be to approve a measure for correction of the detrimental situation of the contaminated sites, re-vegetation project – greening of selected zones and trained experts and well-informed public in environmental protection. The last phase will be a detailed project of sanitation of the whole area and an exploitation proposal of the territory.
The project will be implemented by the Czech firm Geotest Brno a.s. The company specializes in providing environmental protection and remediation services, hydrogeology and ecological engineering. The Geotest Brno a.s. has good experience with environment projects in the Republic of Albania. The company already implemented a project in Vlora, which aimed to remove mercury from the soil in the area of the former Chemical PVC Plant in Vlora in 2006 – 2007.
