TIRANA, Sep. 24 – Edi Paloka of the governing Democratic Party came out victorious in Sunday’s voting for the post of the parliamentary seat left vacant after President Bamir Topi was elected last July.
Paloka won with 6,268 votes to 4,701 of Luan Zhegu of the opposition Socialist Party.
The other major contender, Dashamir Shehi of the monarchist National Development Movement, received only 1,217 votes.
Central Election Commission head Clirim Gjata considered Sunday’s votes exemplary and a model to be followed in the future.
Independent monitors also said they had noted no serious problems, and they did not agree with opposition Socialists, and also Shehi, who said that the government institutions and officials were exploited to support Paloka.
