TIRANA, Feb 1 – American authorities have handed to the Albanian prosecutors the testimony from Efraim Diveroli, owner of the AEY Inc. company who is being investigated and charged in the United States for giving Chinese-made ammunition to the Afghan army, which is not allowed by US laws.
Diveroli had a $300 million contract with the Pentagon to give ammunition to the afghan army. He secured much of the ammunition from Albania and changed the labels to show they were not Chinese-made products.
The scandal erupted last March after the explosion at the Gerdec disposal ammunition factory near the capital Tirana.
Diveroli was in close contact with the Albanian defense ministry.
The ministry’s top official in charge of the Meico company involved in weapon trade, together with the Albanian owner and a manager of the company disposing of the ammunition have been arrested.
The prosecutor’s office is also investigating former defense minister Fatmir Mediu for abuse of post during this deal.
Diveroli was questioned by the US authorities following a request from their Albanian counterparts.
His testimony is considered to be very important in the Albanian process.
