TIRANA, May 9 – The coastal city of Durres celebrated the Europe Day with a series of events including painting, journalism and essay competitions as well as music performances which brought together the region’s best high schools.
The “Durres, a European Region” week opened on May 3 with a seminar on intercultural dialogue as a basic principles of democratic citizenship and European integration with the participation of senior local government officials.
Events continued with the opening of a painting exhibition by students of the ‘Jan Kukuzeli” arts high school at the “Aleksander Moisiu” cultural centre. Students introduced symbols of the European Union and Albania’s integration into it.
The European week was accompanied with concerts by the string orchestra of the “Jan Kukuzeli” high school and choreographic performances by a Swiss dance theatre.
The closing day on May 9 was attended even by the head of the EC Delegation to Albania, Ambassador Helmuth Lohan.
The prize award ceremony was held on Sunday evening at the “Aleksander Moisiu” theater.
The activity was organized in cooperation with six municipalities of the Durres region.
This year’s May 9 marked the 60th anniversary of the Declaration proposed by then French Foreign Minister, Robert Schuman that laid the foundations for what has become European Union.
