TIRANA, Sep. 24 – Electoral reform will be a top priority for the parliament in the coming session.
The special parliamentary commission on electoral reform held its first meeting Monday. A week ago, the parliament prolonged its mandate by another three months after nothing was achieved during the first months of its work.
Electoral reform is a main shortcoming of the country’s integration efforts into the international institutions.
Parliament Speaker Jozefina Topalli said, however, that experts had worked during the summer, adding the country would also ask for expert assistance from the Venice Commission.
Kastriot Islami of the main opposition Socialist party, a co-chairman of the commission, said they were open to any change, including that of the election model.
