TIRANA, March 14 – Prime Minister and Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha said last week that his party’s main campaign motto for the May 8th local elections would be “Green Albania” in efforts to solve the problem of air pollution in Tirana as the main objective.
Berisha told a group of environmentalists that the capital, which is run by the opposition Socialist Party leader Edi Rama as its mayor, is “one of the most polluted capitals in Europe”.
The main opposition Socialist Party replied by accusing Berisha of making Albania a “trash bin” for Europe’s waste, a reference to plans to allow the import of waste from other countries. Critics say that will harm the environment.
Almost the same days the attention of the capital’s environment turn at its Botanic Garden, an institution covering about ten he cares in the capital where they make the studying of all the country’s plants.
A new ring for the capital has planned to pass through it and get up to one-fourth of its space. Its managers and experts strongly denounced that.
More so did the opposition blaming the Transport Ministry of such a blameful act.
The next day the Minister came out to show that the new plan had little change from what the EBRD had mapped and blamed the opposition for doing such a ‘blasphemy’ during its years in power.
What is true, what the opposition or the government is saying? Hard to say and conclude. Both groupings used their political tools to hold small protests against each other.
If it results in damaging much of the Botanic Garden, then useless to say that politics doesn’t help in this country.
That has been shown for the last two decades. It’s a pity the same thing goes on and the country’s green areas continue to diminish.
