TIRANA, July 23 – Europe and the United Stated hailed the election of Bamir Topi as new president of Albania in a move that saved the country from holding new general elections.
In a statement issued by Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn, he said that, “I welcome the successful conclusion of the Presidential elections in Albania, in line with the Constitution. I congratulate Mr Topi on his election as President. The President has a vital role in fostering democratic stability and cooperation. I wish the best of success for Mr Topi’s work.”
The United States was the first country to hail Topi’s election just one day after the election.
“We congratulate the people and the parliament of Albania on the successful conclusion of the process of electing their new president,” said a statement from the Department of State. “This demonstration of strength and maturity by Albania’s democratic institutions is a step forward for Albania on the path of Euro-Atlantic integration. We look forward to working with the new president and continuing our cooperation with Albania’s leadership to deepen the strong relations between our two countries.”
