Experts urge work to stop future flooding

TIRANA – Experts believe that the lack of care and inappropriate treatment of the country’s nature in general has resulted in such a grave calamity.
Perparim Hoxha and Dhimiter Vogli said authorities should calculate the amount of rains and also take good care of the embankments, canals, and all the other technology covering water discharge from the areas.

Berisha says plan in place against flooding

TIRANA – Prime Minister Sali Berisha said Monday while speaking with his Democratic Party lawmakers that the government had made plans for a big project to deal with the reasons and causes of the natural calamity, or the Balkan flooding, as he called it.
He said that projects will run for different parts and they would be expensive and take time.

Many national roads under water

TIRANA – Many roads across Albania practically impassible over the previous weekend following heavy rain.
The Transport Ministry reported daily on the situation of the roads.
Roads taking to northwestern Shkodra were blocked and let free only one side road from Mjeda.
Besides many other national roads in Durres, Fier, Vlora (southwest) and Librazhd and Korca (central east) were blocked temporarily
Flooding has covered not only Albania’s northwest but also many areas in Fier and Vlora after the Vjosa River overflow. The same also happened in Maliq in Korca district.

Foreign minister asks for aid from NATO member countries

TIRANA – Foreign Minister Edmond Haxhinasto convened last Sunday all ambassadors of the NATO member countries and more asking for emergency aid.
Haxhinasto said that Albanian authorities were more keen in having small boats, medicine and other minor stuff needed for the daily life of the evacuated people and also transport vehicles.
Immediately, Turkey and Greece sent helicopters while Italy some emergency aid.

Kosovo offers 1 million euros in aid

PRISHTINA – Kosovo’s government decided Tuesday to offer 1 million euros in assistance to the flooded areas in northwestern Albania.
The government also set half a million for the areas inside Kosovo.
Outgoing Prime Minister Hashim Thaci also said that Kosovo would be ready to increase the number of the army troops, specialized in emergency situations, which are already in Albania.

Citizens protest ‘state neglect’

FUSHE-KRUJE – People in Fushe Kruje, just north of capital Tirana, came out in a protest Monday and blocked the town’s main street asking for attention and support from the government
The small town was flooded twice in the last ten days and they blamed government authorities for not taking any measure to prevent such flooding.
They also complained there was no care at all shown from the government following the flooding and they were suffering not only financial cost but also food items.
Protesting voices were also heard in western Durres area and also the southeastern Korca district.
