SHKODRA, March 24 – The family of a teenager who died when he stepped on a mine while collecting scrap at a military enclosure is asking for the type of compensation being received by families of the Gerdec explosion.
Nikolle Marshi, 13, died last January when he stepped on an explosive within a military unit where he was collecting scrap. He reportedly was able to sell scrap metal for 200 leks per kilogram to support his family.
His father, Daniel Marashi, said someone should be held responsible for the loss of his child as explosives should not be left unattended. He also said his case is similar to that of the Gerdec families suffering from the explosion March 15 which killed at least 22 persons and injured more than 300.
The Marashi family have no family members employed and are supported only by social assistance, a very minimal figure.
