TIRANA, Feb 18 – Damir Fazlic, the Bosnian British businessman, was questioned for two days from Albanian prosecutors investigating his involvement in suspected money laundering.
Fazlic was questioned on his source of money and the way he had bought various hectares of land in Porto Romano part of the Durres district.
Fazlic did not make any comments other than saying that he came to Albania as a sign of respect for the Albanian justice system.
During the questioning he was accompanied by an Albanian lawyer.
During his testimony he insisted that he has held his business activity in line with Albanian laws. He said that he had brought the money to buy the land from a non-Albanian bank and that he had paid the farmer in cash because they had had no bank accounts.
The investigation has also included Foreign Minister Lulzim Basha, Basha’s brother-in-law Erion Isufi, and also lawyer Flutura Kola, a partner with Argita Mallltezi, and Prime Minister Sali Berisha’s daughter all considered to be friends of Fazlic.
The case started after Fazlic was temporarily accompanied by Bosnian police in Sarajevo. The local media reported that Fazlic was a close friend with Berisha’s daughter and that he was involved in different businesses that had opened four or five companies. These companies were found to have no business activity, raising doubts of possible money laundering.
