TIRANA, Jan 26 – Albanian prosecutors have asked Damir Fazlic, the Bosnian British businessman being investigated for possible money laundering, to return to the country for questioning.
Fazlic turned into a main target of the investigation after he was briefly detained and questioned by Bosnian police last year.
Following that, the Albanian media reported he was one of the international advisers to the governing Democratic Party during its electoral campaign in 2005 and also a close friend of Prime Minister Sali Berisha and his daughter, a lawyer. Later it was learned, and confirmed by Fazlic, that he was involved in buying land in an Albanian area that may later become an industrial park.
The opposition and the media accused Berisha of offering public land to Fazlic in an irregular way.
Prosecutors have asked Fazlic to come to Albania no later than Feb. 28 to be questioned and his lawyers have not turned down the request.
Fazlic came to Albania after being accused by the opposition and gave an interview to a local private TV station, then abruptly left the country under the escort of senior officials and police officers.
