TIRANA, March 17 – The International Day of Francophone, which this year marks the 40th anniversary of the foundation of the International Organization of Francophone, will also be celebrated in Albania with a series of events. The opening ceremony of this year’s event will be held on March 19 at the premises of the Albanian Foreign Ministry.
The “Francophone Spring” events, organized by the French embassy in Tirana in cooperation with some other embassies and cultural institutions in Albania, will bring French poetry evenings, theatrical pieces, movies, exhibitions and music.
The events, which continue until April 7, will kick off on Saturday with a concert at the Circus of the Metropolis Theatre in Tirana to continue with a conference on music and communication by Serbian Dimitrie Soreanu, a professor of the University of Music in Bucharest and a French poetry evening on the same day.
The Francophone Spring events will also move to the cities of Korca, Shkodra, and Elbasan where different events will be staged. The southern town of Permet has also become part of this year’s calendar of events. An exhibition of the French books has been scheduled to be held in the local library there on March 24.
On Tuesday March 23, a musical and poetry show will be held at the Skanderbeg square in Tirana.
The events will continue on March 25 with a conference called “Camus – One reason to live and one reason to die” paying homage to great French writer Albert Camus at the premises of the French Alliance in Tirana.
Activities will also be held in different clubs in Tirana where young French singers will perform live.
The cultural events are expected to revive the cultural life in Albania, further promoting the French culture and arts in the country which numbers thousands of French speakers.
Albania has been a full member of the International Organization of Francophone since 2006.
French is widely taught subject in Albanian schools. Several foreign languages schools have also established bilingual Albanian-French sections.
