TRIESTE, July 22 – Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini is becoming a strong supporter and advocate of Albania’s integration process into the European Union.
Speaking in Trieste, Italy on the disparity of the treatment of integration processes into the block, Frattini said the southern Balkans should not be excluded from the European unification process.
It’s good to have Iceland in Europe but Albania can’t wait,” said Frattini.
Iceland’s application will be discussed in the forthcoming meeting of the Europe’s Council.
“We agree that Iceland should enter into the great European family. But the proposal already advanced from Albania should not remain closed in the drawers of some bureaucrat in Brussels. The southern Balkans can not be excluded from the great process of European unification.”
Albania applied for the candidate status in late April after its Stabilization and Association Agreement was ratified by all EU member countries.
Albania also became a NATO member country in early April.
