TIRANA, Aug. 11 – Frenchman Joel Buton crossed Albania on foot during a walk he began in 1999 at the Arch of Triumph in Paris.

He was walking to protest against mine accidents that take people’s lives.

Buton, 48, started in Paris, crossed into Britain, then in other countries in northern Europe, Scandinavia and, after Albania, he is to cross into Greece. He has already done 38,500 kilometers.

He is to walk 45,000 kilometers by the end of the tour that will take him back to Paris.

He came to Vlora in Albania, and then moved across to Fier where he hoped to get the signature of the city mayor. From Fier he would go to Gjirokastra and then to Greece.

In a notebook he has signatures and words from 135,000 people, including some 4,800 mayors.
