TIRANA, Aug. 21 – German Chancellor Angela Merkel will soon visit Albania, according to Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha.

Berisha said on Tuesday that bilateral relations will greatly intensify in the next months.

The German Defense Minister is expected to come to Albania in September and in October the German State Minister of Economic Cooperation is expected to come as well.

“Albanians are very proud to welcome in September Germany’s defense minister and we are very grateful for Germany’s aid given to reform the Albanian army,” said Berisha.

Germany has been a main supporter of Albania, which is reforming its military to reach NATO standards in hopes of joining the alliance by 2008.

Berisha said that in his last visit to Salzburg he was assured by Chancellor Merkel that visiting Albania was part of her agenda and “that is happy news for all Albanian citizens.”

“Let’s work together to turn this visit into a great event between our two countries and two nations,” said Berisha.
