TIRANA, Oct. 2 – Prime Minister Sali Berisha said this week his government is determined to adopt an intelligence law that respects NATO standards.
Berisha spoke after meeting with NATO Supreme Allied Commander for Europe James Stavridis in Tirana.
That law has been postponed or turned back twice following pressure from Brussels fearing that would put the Albanian secret police under the prime minister’s control.
NATO countries had criticized the draft law on the State Information Service for stripping the institution of its independence and giving the executive branch more control over it.
Albania became a NATO member in 2009 and should normally follow all the alliance’s criteria.
