TIRANA, May 23lbania will invest 800 million euro in tourism development in its part of the Ohrid Lake shore and the town of Podgradec, Prime Minister Sali Berisha told national media.
The investment will make Podgradec and the Albanian shore of the Ohrid Lake into an impressive tourism centre, Berisha told the Shekulli national newspaper.
The funds, which are included in the Ecological Protection of Lake Ohrid programme, will be co-financed with Germany, the prime minister explained. He added that the sewer system in Podgradec will be constructed according to European standards.
Once a favorite summer escape for many communist government officials and particularly Enver Hoxha, the town of Podgradec went into a state of decay and disrepair after Albania’s communist system collapsed in the early 1990s. But in recent years, it has slowly began to revive and catch up to its neighboring town of Ohrid on the Macedonian side, which has enjoyed immense popularity as a summer resorts both among Macedonians and tourists from the region.
In trying to bring the town to its former glory, private investors and the government have started spending funds on rebuilding and refurbishing hotels and improving infrastructure.
