TIRANA, May 25 – The Governor of the Bank of Albania has publicly hailed the controversial 30 million euro purchase of the state-owned Dajti Hotel by the central bank, saying that he was pleased with it. Speaking during a press conference on Wednesday, governor Fullani said he had carefully followed recent debates on the sale of Dajti hotel and that he felt happy that the Bank of Albania was offered the opportunity to buy one the capital’s most landmark buildings in the capital’s main boulevard.
“I want to stress that the Council of Ministers decision on the sale of state-owned ex-Dajti hotel marks the beginning of the materialization of a project perceived many years ago by the Bank of Albania. Our motivation to buy this building is based on the organic law, respective legal and regulatory framework to achieve the administrative well-functioning of the institution, the improvement of working conditions for employees and their approximation to European standards,” adding Fullani, guaranteeing the public of transparency of procedures.
The opposition called the sale of Dajti hotel to the central bank two weeks ago an operation to fill up the empty coffers of government.
The Bank of Albania will use hotel while its headquarters are being refurbished. The government repeatedly failed to sell the hotel to private investors. The 98-room Dajti was Tirana’s only luxury hotel during the post-WWII decades of Communist rule but fell into disuse after the Communist regime collapsed in 1990.
